PL 2026/27: 5 talking points from Gameweek 6
Every Premier League weekend brings a lot of fast-paced action, edge-of-the-seat drama, controversy, and chaos. The past weekend also brought a lot of those things, as we saw some big match-ups, some easy fixtures, some disappointments, and a few controversial calls from the referees.
Here are five talking points from Gameweek 6 of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Spurs earn a draw at Old Trafford but still await season’s first win
Spurs performed superbly at Old Trafford, dominating the entire first half against Manchester United. However, they still couldn’t take their chances and United capitalised when they had one and took the lead. Spurs broke United hearts in stoppage time, though, as Dominic Solanke scored to earn a well-deserved point.
After all their efforts in the transfer window, the Lilywhites are still not able to produce the kind of results that were expected from them. They have looked good in attack but haven’t been able to act decisively and be clinical in the final third. It feels like they lack an elite finisher in their team.
Although they have earned two back-to-back draws now, Spurs are yet to secure a win in the Premier League this season. Their progress is definitely slow and with the kind of money they spent in the transfer window, we wonder how long it’s going to take before the Spurs’ management loses trust in Roberto De Zerbi.
Man City silenced a hostile Anfield, but what’s next?
The weekend saw a blockbuster match between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield. The Cityzens played at a hostile stadium and were the second-best side for a half, with Liverpool dominating the proceedings.
However, once midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was dismissed with a second yellow, the game opened up for City and they exploited the numerical advantage to bag a massive 3–0 win in a tough away game. There was also a bit of controversy regarding the poor refereeing standards in the game, as Gravenberch’s dismissal felt a bit harsh and made the game one-sided.
More than the game and Man City’s performance, though, the independent commission’s report on the 115 charges and the impending action still hang over the club’s head. Whatever may be happening on the pitch, off the field there is a lot of noise from football pundits, ex-football players, and rival fan bases alike regarding the charges and speculation around what may happen.
It’s not an easy situation to be in, and for the time being Man City players are keeping it out of their mind, winning games and being unbeaten at top of the league table, but the pressure will only increase. Until the whole issue is resolved, there will be a dark cloud hanging over the club and the Premier League in general.
The Seagulls get the better of the Black Cats, but how far can they go?
Brighton have surprised one and all with their incredible start to the season. They have performed brilliantly, having lost only one game so far, beaten the defending champions comprehensively, and knocked out Manchester United from the Carabao Cup as well. Brighton have also scored the most goals in the league (18) so far, two more than table-toppers Man City, and conceded the joint-least goals (5) along with City and Arsenal.
Their most recent game was away at the Stadium of Light, where they won a fighting three points even after going a man down. Pascal Groß looks like a player reborn with three goals and four assists in six games. The Seagulls are currently third in the table with 13 points after six games. The most impressive part of their narrative is that Brighton have quite a few key players out with injury, yet they have done well without any complaints, playing some of the most attacking football in the league.
The South Coast side are also playing in the Conference League, which means having a tough, almost three-game-a-week schedule. Therefore, it’s going to be challenging for Brighton with a relatively smaller squad to keep up the performances and stay in the title race, though they have started the right way.
The Cottagers are in trouble: Is the job proving too big for Arbeloa?
Fulham have started the new season in dismal form and are currently sitting bottom of the league table with two draws and four defeats. New head coach Álvaro Arbeloa hasn’t been able to get the results expected from him and his players.
The Cottagers’ latest defeat away to Ipswich Town has really piled the pressure on the Spaniard, who looks like he’s still trying to understand whether the issue is mental or tactical. It’s not like they are playing bad football; at times they have really shown a fair bit of quality, but it hasn’t really clicked for them.
Fulham is without a win after six league games, having failed to get three points even at home. And it’s not like they were given a particularly tough set of fixtures to start their campaign with, barring facing Chelsea and Manchester United. Although it’s early, if they don’t start picking up results soon, with the buoyant Hull City up next for them, more doubts will creep up in the minds of not just their fans but also those higher up in the management at Craven Cottage.
Coventry thrash the Magpies at home: Is this the impetus they needed?
Promoted to the Premier League this season alongside Ipswich Town and Hull City, Coventry were the only ones looking out of sorts in the first few games.
However, over the past three games they have started to show why they did well in the Championship last season and deserved their automatic promotion. Coventry won their first home game against Newcastle United, thrashing them 4–1. Their previous game was another upset away at Nottingham Forest.
For two games in a row, Coventry have shown fight and desire to compete and hope to their fans that they can survive in the top flight.
It’s only been six games, and considering three of their fixtures were against Arsenal, Man City, and an in-form Brighton side, they have recovered well to get back-to-back wins. This could prove to be the sort of impetus and confidence they needed to get the belief back.
With some of their key players coming back from injuries, the Sky Blues could go on to surprise a few people and maybe, just maybe, stay up this season.
