ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027: Groups, key fixtures, and venues

The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is now officially just a year away, with the world cricket–governing body having announced the fixtures and dates for the 50-over tournament set to be hosted jointly by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. The opening game will be held on October 2, with the final scheduled for November 21.

Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg is set to host the final, while Newlands Stadium in Cape Town will host the opening game, pitting the 2023 World Cup finalists, India and Australia.

The teams participating in the 2027 World Cup are divided into two groups of six each. Group A comprises Afghanistan, defending champions Australia, India, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and a yet-to-be-confirmed qualifying team. Group B is looking tougher on paper, featuring co-hosts South Africa, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and another unconfirmed qualifying side.

This time around, there is a new tournament format. Unlike the last World Cup, where every team played each other once, followed by the semi-finals and the final, the 2027 edition will see a second round post the group stage called the Super 7, which will comprise the top three from each group and the better fourth-placed team from the two groups.

It is worth noting that, just like the 2024 and the 2026 T20 World Cups, teams have already been seeded, which raises the prospects of a second India–Pakistan contest, with both sides already scheduled to play in the group stage on October 10 in Johannesburg.

There are some rather tasty fixtures apart from India–Australia and India–Pakistan as well. Afghanistan–Australia carries an already feisty undertone to their clash given the frosty relationship between the two sides, and the fact that Australia broke Afghan hearts in the 2023 World Cup clash in Mumbai. Bangladesh–Sri Lanka games have rapidly become worthwhile due to the sheer drama involved between these two nations, while South Africa–New Zealand, South Africa–England, and Pakistan–Afghanistan will also be worth watching.

The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be hosted in 12 venues across three countries: Windhoek in Namibia; Victoria Falls, Harare, and Bulawayo in Zimbabwe; and Cape Town, Paarl, Johannesburg, Tshwane (Centurion), Durban, Bloemfontein, KuGompo City (East London), and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in South Africa.

The Super Series will be held from October 2 onwards, at a venue that is yet to be decided. Co-hosts Zimbabwe are set to play all their group stage matches at home. Newlands will host one semi-final, with the other to be played in Tshwane (Centurion). Durban will host five games, including the final Super Seven game of the tournament.

The advance announcement of the venues and fixtures is a stark contrast to the hassles and hurdles that surfaced while announcing the fixtures and venues for the last World Cup, when they were announced less than two months away from the tournament kicking off and prompted a lot of chaos and confusion in terms of purchasing tickets for the games across the venues for the other teams.
